Hong Kong Schools urged to step up flu precautions after boy of 6 dies

The death of a six-year-old from flu has raised fears in the city after health minister Dr Ko Wing-man said children were more susceptible to viruses this year and the Observatory warned of unusually cold weather next week.

The boy had been suffering from a fever, cough and runny nose. He was admitted to Tseung Kwan O Hospital on Monday with stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea and died the next day.

He tested positive for influenza B virus and was also diagnosed with myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscles. His elder sister also developed symptoms of upper respiratory illness and is stable in the hospital.
